South West Turf is a family run enterprise, although being new to the world of turf, Hayden has been in agriculture for over 25 years. Due to our relative inexperience in turf, Hayden chose to engage a local agronomist in Peter Hill. Peter has a Bachelor in Agricultural Science, and is consulted regularly. Turfgrass Scientific Services based in Sydney, has also been available from day one. Peter McMaugh from TSS has 45 years experience and his knowledge of turf is unparalleled in the turf industry. Therefore turf problem solving is only a phone call away. The combined knowledge and experience at hand ensures your turf arrives in absolute peak condition.
South West Turf is located at Griffith NSW, in the heart of the Riverina, and is capable of servicing customers throughout southern NSW and beyond. Veronica has past retail experience and a great eye for detail. Veronica’s past positions in retail management will ensure that you are completely satisfied with our turf and prompt efficient service.
Our turf operation tried to commence in 2007 with the purchase of a centre pivot irrigator. Only to have our water allocations slashed to a negative figure! This was due to unprecedented drought conditions across the Murray Darling Basin and poor arithmetic.
The proposed turf operation had to go on the backburner.
The ongoing drought and tight water supplies focused our attention on new turf varieties more suited to our Australian climate. For that reason, and close consultation with the experts, we have planted warm season turf types, ideally suited to our variable Australian climate. The turf varieties we have selected are more drought hardy than some previously available. Our “Kings Pride” is the new generation of soft leaf buffalo lawn.
Our first turf was planted in the summer of 2008 and some twelve months later, we are now harvesting our first cut.
The turf enterprise came about by a desire to diversify an irrigation farming business. A need for greater water use efficiency within our operation was also a major driving factor. Plans are already in the pipeline for further expansion into turf.
South West Turf has been encouraged and supported by other turf growers with lots of great advice, and would not have got off the ground, but for the generous help of; Turf Producers Association Australia, Peter McMaugh of Turfgrass Scientific Services and John & Susan Gardiner, proud owners of Kings Pride Buffalo.
